Certification

Burrard Clean Operations (BCO) must demonstrate to Transport Canada that it is prepared to respond to a spill under various circumstances. As a response organization, this certification is required every three years under the Canada Shipping Act. In order to continually meet requirements, BCO holds a number of both field exercises and spill response training courses within each certification period.

Exercises

Every year

  • Notification exercises (quarterly)
  • 150 tonne equipment deployment
  • 1,000 tonne table-top scenario

Every 2 years

  • 2,500 tonne equipment deployment

Every 3 years

  • 10,000 tonne table-top scenario

 

BCO also participates in numerous member exercises, as well as annual joint US and Canadian Coast Guard cross-border/mutual aid exercises for both the Alaska/BC and Washington State/BC borders.


Training

Courses include a wide range of oil spill topics including marine, land and river spills, Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Team (SCAT) and trajectory modeling, and Incident Command System Levels 100/200/300.

BCO is certified as one of only two organizations in Canada to provide IMO courses. We now offer:

  • IMO Model Level I (1st Responders)
  • IMO Model Level II (Supervisors and On-Scene Commanders
