Oiled Wildlife

Burrard Clean Operations (BCO) is a founding member and sponsor of the Oiled Wildlife Society of BC, a group comprised primarily of government agencies and non-government organizations involved in oiled bird rehabilitation. BCO supports the rehabilitation of oiled wildlife and assists in the acquisition, maintenance and housing of bird rescue and rehabilitation equipment for this group. BCO is in possession of two oiled bird response trailers that contain equipment owned and maintained by the Society.

In the event of an oil spill with significant wildlife impact, BCO can have one of two roles in the wildlife response. The Responsible Party (RP), may request BCO to include the wildlife response in its response operations. BCO, under the direction of the RP, will then manage the wildlife response through a wildlife branch established within the Operations Section of the Incident Command System. Wildlife rescue activities will be directed by the regional SPCA, and a local wildlife rehabilitation centre with oiled bird rescue experience. In the lower mainland, the Vancouver SPCA and the Wildlife Rescue Association have filled these roles in the past. In other areas of the province, members of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Network of BC may be called upon to direct rehabilitation activities. If a large wildlife response is required, BCO and the RP may choose to hire a professional organization such as Focus Wildlife to work within the Incident Command.
